I reside in southern California and I grow these in both the city of Los Angeles and out on a piece of property in the desert communities. We get zero rain during summer months and so, I hand water the watermelon. I keep the soil moist during germination then water two or three days a way. I can tell how much a plant needs by sticking my finger in the ground or by looking at the leaves. These particular watermelon naturally grow larger than the average 'refridgerator' watermelon as like the sugarbaby.

If you live in an area where you get plenty of rain during the summer's, you may be able to get away without watering after germination. Some folks will pick an empty, sunny spot on their property and plant a bunch of melons because they get plenty of rain durng the summer.

I grow plenty of veggies during the summer here in southern California and use minimal water. The trick is to companion plant.. by planting veggies that are similar. Don't plant something that needs a lot of water near a veggie like okra or something that needs very little water. Plant vegetables that compliment one another like onions will help protect watermelon from particular pests, won't compete for root space and grow up and not out. Also plant drought tolerant flowers as like marigold that will help protect agains pests and also need little water.

Always take guidance from the native people in your region as well. I learned that the Hopi (southwestern native people) Indians planted watermelon like squash between hills of corn. Some people planted them in between four hills in groups of 1, 4 or 6 seeds. Some planted them in the same hill as the corn, as follows - corn in the center, beans in middle and squash/watermelon at bottom.

**This system of companion planting is called 'The Three Sisters" by native people. Planting corn, melon, squash and beans is most beneficial. The beans feed the corn nitrogen, the melons and squash protect the corn from toppling over and from pests, the corn shade and protect the melon and squash, and each plant is basically a sort of pesticide to one another. Particular bugs that like corn don't like beans or squash or particular bugs like that like beans can't stand corn, etc.

Another good way of planting watermelon is to cut the bottom of a very large cylinder container as like a large coffee can. Push the coffee can into the ground, and a watermelon inside of the can. When you water, only water inside of the coffee can. This will ensure that the water goes straight down where the roots of the watermelon are. Watermelon like to grow one main root straight down. It's basically its life source.

Another way to save water is to dig a hole (large dip) and plant three seeds. When you water. .. the water will puddle then go strait down into the ground. As the plant grows and you continue to water...the plant will benefit from that puddle of water because, you're not watering in areas around the plant that don't need it. Just because a plant like a watermelon vines out.. you don't have to water the entire area.. only the root system .. about a one foot area. Many folks will water the entire vining system.

If you want to learn more about conserving water particularly when planting melons.. read a bit about how native people in the desert areas thrived or there's also books out there on "sqare foot gardening".

I'm originally from Ireland and when I eventually came to California.. I must have picked up every book that I could read regarding desert gardening. There just aren't any books available so, I had to learn from history books and actual agricultural book. .. <boring!

My first month of planting.. my water bill was sky high! I eventually learned ideas like a radish will grow on a bed of pebbles or companion planting and the three sisters are the brain child of water conservancy.

Cheers,
LosAngeles

I planted some pumpkins last year, and used the washing machine drain off, to water my pumpkins and elephant ears. But I did redirect it when I used bleach, and they loved it! Lots of mulch works well to! I fanned you and currently the high bidder to.
