Description

The listing, Lake Superior Large Agate Crystal Rock Slices - Winner's Choice! has ended.

Winner will choose 1 Agate slice from the photographs. These are large polished Lake Superior agate slices.

#1- Beautiful reds, oranges, and browns with vibrant banding on both sides! This is a Fortification Agate. It is approximately 2 1/2" x 2" x 1/2".

#2- Beautiful yellows, oranges, tans, and whites with strong lines on both sides! This is a Waterline Agate. It is approximately 2" x 1 3/4" x 1/2". This Waterline Agate is very unique- it has a very nice crystal formation within the slice that is visible on both sides. The crystals are a light purple in color.

Lake Superior Agates are some of the most sought after in the world, due to their striking red and white banding, and varying patterns. It is truly a treasure when you come upon one while walking Lake Superior beaches. Large Agates are a rare find and really only obtainable while scuba diving the cold waters. Agates have gained tremendous popularity within the last 10 years and the beaches are over picked.

Lake Superior Agates were sacred to the Northern tribes of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Canada- like the Ojibwa, Sioux and Chippewa. Agates were considered powerful healers.

Lake Superior Agates can be used for chest issues. They also have strong grounding and protective healing properties. It can assist in healing the feeling of one's self worth.

Again- the winner gets to choose 1 Agate.

Oh boy! The red one has gorgeous banding and colors, yet the yellow one is so unique because it has a crystal formation. I believe it's Amethyst, since Quartz is common in Agate and the colors/ lack of are from iron deposits. I didn't know that about Gold, but it makes total sense. My mother belongs to a Gold Prospectors Group. They find Gold in north central WI. Maybe the Wolf has some! This weather has been just crazy- that's WI for ya.

Question? Do you know if they still find gold nuggets? I have a set with a copper and silver nugget. But I tried to win a gold nugget on here and the guy ended up being a scmmr. Now I still need one to finish the set. Do you by chance have one or can get one?
Apr 15th, 2014 at 3:29:02 AM PDT by
Original
I don't have any gold nuggets. They pop up on Listia every once in a while- you will just have to stay determined on your searches. Have you ever heard of "half breeds?" They are formations (sometimes nugget like) that are half copper and half silver (part copper and part silver). I have a collection and would possibly be willing to part with 1 for GIN. They are found in the copper country of the Upper Peninsula of MI and are somewhat rare.

I have never heard them called half breeds.I am interested but am out of credits and out of money. It may be a wail before I can have something to offer.

Wish there weren't so many days left. I really love the red one. I may have to road trip to the U.P. and see what I can find myself. :)

It's well worth the trip! The UP is very beautiful. The MN side has beautiful Agates and Thomsonite.

I only find the babies but find other wonderful stones the closer I get to michigan. Also good concretions sometimes. Very nice specimens.

You know your stuff! I love Concretions, but they can be difficult to find now days. I'm guessing you know the right beach on Lake Superior ;) WI doesn't have very interesting geology, but the UP- now that's wow!

Your right about Wi beaches, but sometimes near Herbster/Cornucopia and Between Ashland and Odana you can still find good Concretions but gotta get wet!

I've been to the Saxon area and found a few when ice went out. That area is Redcliff Tribal land, so beach is very limited/ restricted. Concretions are considered sacred and are said to contain a spirit. I have not been to the Cornucopia beach area/s. A trip to the Apostles is now on my to- do list for the summer! I haven't been there in quite a few years.

I did not know that about concretions but it does make sense! I haven't been to Isles for a long time either. Painted Rocks trip a few years back. I like the mouth of the baptism river in MN as well. Never thought I would find another Rock Hound on Listia!
Apr 18th, 2014 at 12:37:41 PM PDT by

There are a few of us Wisconsinites on here that are rock hounds :) I have yet to make it to Painted Rock- looks amazing! I will be heading to Copper Harbor for Copper mines and Marquette for Iron mines (Hematite) this spring. Super stoked!
Apr 18th, 2014 at 2:15:55 PM PDT by
Original
Oh if your between copper harbor and marquette take a stop in at painted rocks and if you have a kayak its amazing! I hope to get to the UP this year, absolutely Love It~~~ do you snorkel or dive?
Apr 19th, 2014 at 4:38:38 AM PDT by
Original
I wish I could fit the Painted Rocks in! We will be spending the day in the Marquette/ Ishpeming area (just enough time to hit 2-3 mines). Kayaks and snorkeling are so fun- 2 essentials for Painted Rock! I'm hoping we will fit Isle Royale in one of these times-never made it there and I've been going UP for years.

I do love them very much and they are all gorgeous , but dang, those are tiny! Those are what's known as "guitar pick." I love your descriptions, and you are so right when you say how the Lake is totally over picked! I think I may have been lucky enough to get there when they weren't so sought after and personally found a few that were 6- 8 inches and still intact! I'd love to dig these waters again, but live near some of the most interesting finds where I search ,while the guys travel different Countries for ours.. Bravo on a beautiful auction! Fanning...

Interesting- I've never heard them called guitar picks by any of the rockers in the UP. Both are 2 inches or more, so that's a jumbo guitar pick then :) The only way to get a chance to find nice sizes anymore is to bear down and get into the water. I have a few very remote spots I get to and find many small and smaller agates. It's still a lot of fun!

What a bummer! I live by the Milwaukee area- Lake Michigan and it's completely the same ;( Lake Michigan gets a touch better by Door County, but even then it's Fossils and Agatized Coral (still fun, but not amazing). Fanning back- thanks so much for checking my auction out!

Eye agates are my favorites too. We used to find the superiors alot when i was a kid many many moons ago but you are right that they have picked the beaches clean for sure I bet a few have surfaced with all the ice melting this spring.. Road trip!!! After our ice storm tonite..lol..
