Questions & Comments
You cleaned it? Just a heads up for you, people often want the item left in the condition it was found in rather than cleaned or shined. Often it loses it's value if cleaned.
reALLY? i wonder why that would be? i apologize; i had no idea. it was yucky dirty w/tarnish and to me, obviously NOT knowledgeable in preserving value of antiques, i thought cleaning it would bring out the beauty. i was very careful, using an oily, non abrasive brass cleaner and a very soft cloth, as to not scratch the metal. who knew tarnish would hold significant value....?? why even make brass cleaners? it's confusing.... i'm sorry people
Yes, not to worry it will get old and tarnished over the years. I wouldn't be concerned . After all they cleaned the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper by Da Vinci!!(And boy were they dirty!! Lol!
hey there.... you sure seem familiar to me. we've auctioned together before; right? i think i won something from you but can't remember what it was. lol how have you been? and thank you for your comment
Well I dont care if its cleaned or dirty hun I want it for my alter and its a very beautiful piece and I will be bidding on it .Love your auctions and dont feel that bad its all good .Anyone can do what ever they want with their items and yes I understand that it might take away from the antique value and not all antique dealers want them cleaned and some do clean their items and thats what they do make brass cleaner for LOL so give her a break .Blessings for you hun and have alot of fun and you have nice things and let me know what other cool things you find too will be bidding on this soon .
There is a piece missing from the ringer. There should have been a brass piece shaped almost like a leaf hanging from the bottom of it. Wonder if it was there but you didn't realize it went together. Nice Auction. F&W.
that's funny cuz i thought it made the bell ugly so i took it off. sorry.... quite obvious i know nothing about all this stuff.. and to think, i've got an entire attic full of stuff that i need to go through and down size.....
Nice. It looks like a tibetan prayer bell. and by the shape yes it is old. If it it solid brass it goes for about $35 to $119 on any given day. @ Purplepinkpansy you are right. One should never clean anything old unless you wantto check and see what it is made of and than you only do a small spot where it can not be seen that good. F&W
a tibetan prayer bell? is that what the images/sketches represent? i did not know, but i thought they were neat. i'm sorry for cleaning it; i really thought i was doing a good thing to bring out the beauty. too bad there wasn't a way to reverse it :o(
Cleaning paintings is also a different story , never use 409!! (lol! That's what my mother used to clean one of her antique paintings! It sure did clean it alright! Right off the canvas!) But Babs Melendy is right, brass is pretty indestructible (Acids could potentially alter the surface, but that is what is usual to "antique " brass" certain acids will change the color to green or brown or black, even red! I did a lost of bronze casting years ago (I'm an artist). I've also done a fair amount of Fine art restoration.
It's a nice piece. I have a couple of vintage shops and I do clean substantially tarnished brass pieces, although I don't make them immaculate. I found it sells better if people can get an idea of what it will look like if they decide to clean it. There are other items, however, as others have told you, do not ever clean. But I find that to be more true of "rusty" pieces, etc. Some prefer them in the current condition, if they want it to look original, they usually pay to have someone do that professionally.
