Hi FT,
I saw another auction and you mentioned it, so thought I would start one since I have some duplicates. If it does well, I have a lot more. Thanks so much for bidding!

Looking forward to your other pre-cancels. Happen to have any of the first three, called" experimentals"?

Hi Whitefoote,
I will take a closer look tomorrow but I doubt I have any with New Orleans, Augusta or Springfield. I do have a 30 cent buffalo PERFIN with Phila PA on it, and it's vertical instead of reading it horizontal. I also have a bunch of "pairs".

Very happy to see you here. I love reading your comments on other sites as well. Thanks again!

Hi Whitefoote,
I do not know which Scott # the NY stamp is. Sady, I am unfamiliar with gauging and perfs. Please keep that in mind when bidding. Thank you, and that is a great question, I wished I knew. Thanks again!

Can I help you with that perf. thing?
You only need to get a perforation gauge.
Costs about $1-2.00 made of paper, metal or plastic.
(I like the plastic best because you can measure the perforations on the edges of the stamp even when they are still on the envelope. With the others you have to put the stamp on top of the gauge, so the paper blocks the view.
(I can put one up on Listia for you.)
Perforations are the holes between (on the edges) of stamps that help the postal clerk to separate and tear them off for sale. (There are several types, including the round ones we most normally see.)
All you do is align the dots on the gauge with the holes on the edges of the stamps. When they match up, that's the number of perforations (holes) on that side of the stamp!
Sometimes the stamps have all the same number of holes on each side, like Perf 11. Sometimes, they have two different number of holes on opposite sides, like perf. 11 x 10 1/2.
AND, some times they have no holes of any kind, that's called "imperforate".

Hi Whitefoote,
Oh how wonderful you are asking if you can help me. But I need a LOT of help LOL. I don't know why I can't figure out the gauge thing. I do have a gauge and for example, the Scott # 737 perf 11 x 10.5 (rotary press) vs. #738, perf 11, flat plate. I think I have both of those stamps (1934 3c Mothers of America) and I have tried to figure out the difference, but I think I need to take a class on perf gauge 101....

I do have a a gauge, it's plastic too.I don't think I understand exactly where to START measuring the stamp. I counted the holes, the points, I did try....

The value of a perforation gauge is that often, it's the only way to tell the difference between one stamp or another.
The image, paper, ink, and watermark can be exactly the same, but the number of pins that were used on the machine to poke the holes between the stamps (perforations) is different.
That's the difference between Scott #551 and #653, as an example.

Hi Whitefoote,
I am going to try to gauge the NY stamp, just to see if I can figure it out, lolol. I am one of those that does really well with hands on training, but not so much written instructions. I will try, it will be fun.

Thank you SO much for all your help. And I always look forward to your comments on other stamp auctions and even copy and save the comments you leave! Thanks again!

One tip: opposite sides have the SAME number of perforations; top and bottom, too - except in the most unusual of examples.

Also, on the rotary press vs flat press.
There is usually another way to determine that.
They use the same image on the etched plate that is attached to the press. But, when they keep one plate flat and then stretch the other plate onto a cylinder (rotary press), the flat plate stays the same size, but the curving of the plate stretches the image a little bit.
If you have both stamps, try putting one on top of the other and aligning the edge of the images, first horizontally and the vertically.
Use a magnifier and you should see that the image is longer or wider (by a very tiny bit) on one of your stamps.
The one that has a longer side will be the rotary press printing.
