Made of wood and beaded. Many beautiful colors. Nice home decor (table decor), collectible or conversation piece. :)

I knew immediately what this item was as well :) Several years ago I got the chance to go to Jalisco, Mexico to an archaeological dig. I even got to speak with the head archaeologist, which was so interesting!

Anyway, I wanted to also mention that Emory University, in Atlanta had an exhibit for a while of huichol indian artifacts such as this one. It may still be there. I saw it in May and am not sure when it was leaving.

the turtle is used for fertility rituals with the female indian to make her more fertale for haveing children when she first gets married ,,i have a little hand carved mother of pearl turtle its a fetish for the female indian to carry around with her in her medicine bag ,,i am cherokee my grandmother was full blooded and she used to tell alot of storys about stuff like that when she was growing up ,,it was amazing to sit and listen to her story,es ,,yes it is very very nice ,,,F&W

Thank you for the addition information. Very interesting. My daughter married a cherokee man quite some years ago. Actually her husband did not speak cherokee, but she learned the alphabet and speaks cherokee fluently. My son-in-law has sinced passed on. He died at a young age. I have cherokee grandchildren & lots of cherokee friends here in my part of the country. :) Also, I live not too far from Tahlequah, OK. Thank you for sharing, I do appreciate the information. I do know though that to us Native People's (I am Dakota Mdewakantonwan ) Turtle Island is the original name of "North America" ... Wasn't aware of it being the whole Earth. Interesting to learn about other cultures and Natives :)

the huichol indians, which are located in the sierra madres i believe. but if you look on the map and follow there rituals they come out of the mountains once a year for a pilgramigdge through san blas mexico. this is a cool piece. just google huichol indians and you will find out what a lovely treasure you have. and congrats on bringing such a nice piece to listia!
