Description

The listing, Antique Victorian Brass Filagree Mourning Brooch? Four Black Cameos Estate Find has ended.

For your consideration is this awesome brass & black brooch. I have never seen one like this one. And I'm not sure of its age. Could be quite old from the way it's made or could be a repo. There is a main cameo with three dangling cameos. Looks like brass to me, yellow goldtone looking. The pin closure works fine. Not sure of the cameo material. Could be plastic or resin or something else. All are prong set. They are lighter weight than you'd expect. Perhaps someone out there would be kind enough to provide some more insight. Always glad to answer any questions I can. Smoke free and pet free home. Thank you for looking and Happy Bidding! Please only Listia verified addresses. All Listia rules applied. I do not do GINS yet so please don't ask me, nor do I lessen days. I like to keep things fair for everyone.

I am only looking at pictures and agree with you that it could be old or a repro. I think the metal may be brass coated lead, again, just looking at pictures. Clasp indicates 1920's to clasp used today. If light in weight and not cool to the touch, probably correct about plastic. Even if plastic, it could be old. Very Victorian in design, much like Queen Victoria herself would have designed. Loupe it or put under magnifying glass and you may be able to tell much more. Nice at any rate.

I looked at it under a magnifying glass and couldn't really tell anything more. Thanks for the idea though.

I used a magnifying glass as you suggested. The only thing I know now that I didn't know before was that The pokey pin end extends beyond the closure end. And that it could use some cleaning but I'll leave that to the new owner.

Thank you for your input Faye. I don't think it to be lead. The metal is soft. I figured it to be brass but I guess it's delicate due to the filagree of it. Always glad to fan back.

I'm terribly sorry to hear of your BFF Julie. May God Bless you all. When my brother passed I wore a mourning brooch and it really helped me on a daily basis. I needed to talk about him and it opened the door to talk about him. I think the Victoriana had something there.

Whether carved from jet, lava, molded of Lucite or resin it is still considered a mourning brooch. Let me educate you kayson95 and others who may no know.. Born 5/24/1819, very young Victoria had coronation 6/20/1837, loved jewelry. She revolutionized the jewelry industry. She designed her own jewelry to wear herself and use as gifts. She incorporated cameos into amazing artistic jewelry. Everyone in the jewelry industry copied her. When her beloved husband Albert died she went into permanent mourning and wore only black clothing and jewelry. Jet, fossilized coal under tons of pressure for millions of years was plentiful. This hard black fossil was used to carve the cameos she would design into the mourning jewelry she would wear until the day of her death from cerebral hemorrhage on 1/22/1901. She was 4'11" . 91 years old at death.

Spouse: Albert Prince Consort (m. 1840-1861) 21 years married. She was around 42 years old and never looked at another man.
Children: Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom, Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, Edward VII, Princess Helena of the United Kingdom, Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, Victoria, Princess Royal
I think that makes 9 living children over her 21 year marriage. Amazing feat in itself.
Foreign policy in her middle years was used to support peace and reconciliation.
