The listing, Amazing Antique hand carved shell cameo brooch or pendant has ended.
This piece is absolutely amazing. It is an antique Cameo brooch, but can also be used as a pendant. This little beauty is what i believe to be hand carved shell. The intriquite details are what i love the most about it. The lovely lady on the front is astonishing, and she is framed with a gold tone filigree border. All Listia rules apply.
If you look up cameos in the search field on here, there are several colored replicas of this exact cameo. Purple, blue etc.... they are not in the same mounting. Some are in bracelets and some are necklaces. She must be a very popular beautiful face! She is VERY VERY PRETTY! I am watching her too!!!!
and you said it can be worn as a pendant...I didn't spot the hoop on the back in the photo. Is there actually a hoop to pull a chain through? Thanks so much ;D
No theres a little hole where a loop would go, the loop is not there though. one could be easily added. Thanks for looking, and GL if you choose to bid.
A carved shell cameo is concave on back, because of the natural shape of the conch. It has nothing to do with wanting them to be unique. They are unique by nature and you cannot grind them down and make them flat if you wanted to. It is carved from the outside in from the top section of a conch shell.
Fanned and watching. Won't bid against my sister. She'd kill me. If she loses bid I will keep my eyes on this. Very nice. My wife uses vintage brooches to close pull over shirts that are open in front and expose more than she likes. These make a nice way to close the slit in the shirt.
I'm sorry to give bad news but true shell is never flat on the back. It will have a wave or sway in it . they never grind them down flat because they want them to be unique . Sorry, wanted to bid......
I believe it is resin mold. In fact, I would bet the farm on it, given the appearance of the cameo and weight. Molded plastic is light in weight. Resin has the weight similar to a stone, but just slightly lighter. The coloring is correct for resin and the pendant and clasp are correct. Add all of this together and you have a vintage resin cameo. Not shell and not plastic or stone. Want to bet me? It is very nice and a good size. I enjoy the replicas when they are well done. This one looks like a keeper to me. She is pretty and cheap at twice the price.
It appears to be molded plastic but hard to tell without feeling or seeing it up close. Stone or porcelain will feel cooler and plastic is just room temp. My guess is the molded plastic.
It does not appear to be Lucite or plastic. Some resins are very good at replicating and still very nice vintage pieces. Shell should be concave on the backside. I have seen many different types of shell cameos, but that is a constant. Without looking at it, I could not say what the material is. Most antique stores or pawn shops can look at it and tell. Does a flashlight shine through it? Is it heavy like stone or light weight? Are there carving marks? Is the face mother of pearl? That shines up nicely.
hi, thanks for the info, the face is not mop, it is a heavy brooch, there are no carving marks that i can tell, and ill check the flashlight thing, and let you know. hope this helps some.
I can't say for sure exactly what it is but it most definitely is not shell. I would need a closer photo but is the lady adhered to the background or does it look like it is one piece?
Well darn, to me the lady is very delicate, maybe she is carved from shell or ivory? and set ontop of a base? Im not an expert on these things. I know for a fact it is not plastic though.
This appears to be Vintage. I would wager a guess of 1950's to 1960's. The styling of the brooch and positioning of the pin clasp on back are strong indicators. Newer brooches do not have the clasp positioned so high on the brooch. The style of the brooch is also very nicely balanced. I like this one. Fanned, watching, bidding. Please fan back.
