Questions & Comments
Hi! Am I thinking of the right plant, these have edible fruit? Or not? Could it grow in a container? And does it need full sun? Sorry for all the questions! I'm very new to gardening, but have discovered that I love it! Thanks! :)
Hi! Yes, prickly pear cactus are edible! The spines are removed, ofcourse. "Many edible cacti belong to one of the 200+ Opuntia species, also known as the nopales, nopalitos, the cactus pear, or the paddle cactus. The leaves and egg-shaped fruit (or "tunas") of all Opuntia are edible. You can identify Opuntia species by their oval, flat leaves or "paddles", covered with small spines. The prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) is the most famous and well-loved of the edible cacti." They can grow in a container, just make sure it drains well--you don't want the soil to be too wet. They don't grow straight up but rather kind of "horizontally." These plants are very hardy and can grow with some sun or a lot of sun. These plants are very difficult to kill, are are very prolific, so very easy to grow! Good Luck to you in your new gardening hobby!
I do hope you have more of these auctions! I really want it, but can't afford (well don't have), the shipping cost right now. Thanks for the great auction! New fan! :)
