Description

The listing, 170 Year Old Newspaper The Philadelphia Sun dated October 21, 1844 - Free Shipping! has ended.

Step back in time nearly two centuries by reading this museum quality copy of The Philadelphia Sun newspaper dated October 21, 1844. The original new stand price was ONE CENT.

This is the entire newspaper not just clippings. It is 4 pages long on two sheets of 6 columns of tiny print. This was the typical size and style of that era.

Newspapers printed after 1799 and prior to 1860 are considered "Antebellum Papers" and were printed on naturally acid free "rag linen" paper so they held up much better than our newspapers of today. There are no illustrations but that is also typical of Antebellum papers since illustrations didn't become popular until several decades after this paper was printed.

This one is slightly yellowed and has been folded. There are no rips or tears and it is in excellent condition in my opinion.

The front page has a fictional story (the kind that teaches morals, you don't see that in papers any more!) It also has articles about Indian Annuities, preserving a man's good name, Foreign Pauperism (what we call Immigration issues today), illegal voters (sound familiar?), fascinating reading!!!

There are also classified ads, advertisements with prices, an article about a new discovery involving electricity, a new automated calculator based on the abacus, consumption cures, a well drilled in Louisiana, etc. They packed so many interesting items in this newspaper I couldn't possible mention them all.

Bidding starts at zero and shipping is FREE! Use the GIN to snap it up before someone else does!

This is NOT a reprint or reproduction. This is an original newspaper.

This is NOT a relist. I recently had a very similar newspaper on here (that found a safe new home with a very nice listian -Thank you Jan!). If they continue to do well on listia I will consider listing even older newspapers.

Good luck bidding! And thanks for stopping by!

It's my pleasure. I actually used to own an antique store that closed in 2003. I have boxes full of stuff in storage that I forgot I had. We will be moving in the spring and I plan to list many other small 19th century items soon as well as a few more newspapers. Keep watching!

I don't recall anything about that in there. I'll take a closer look after work. I should be home 2 or 3 hours before this ends tonight.

By any chance, do you know whether their is any article in this paper that talk's about the Adventist Church. The very next day "Oct 22, 1844" was suppose to be the 1st thought of Christ's return. At least how it was perceived by William Miller. Renowned preacher of the time.

No problem, I understand, I use to work odd hours for many years before I retired. I hated swing shifts and on call days too. Don't worry about it for a couple of days.

I am answering most comments from my phone app. This is my week on call for work. I'm sorry I haven't. I usually fall into bed as soon as I get home. I will make it a point to look tonight. I'll have to get this one ready to ship anyway so I'll be right there with them and I'll send you a message. My apologies.

Have any other Listia readers that have read just a little of how the verbiage is compared to how simply worded our papers are now?

The 1 paper I have was printed on July 4th,1856 by the free slaves. It would be awesome if I won to cross t h e difference of what was going on in that time frame in history.

Every inch of it is fascinating, from the prices in the ads to the news, even the wording is so different from modern times. It's all in English but the style of speaking has evolved so much it's just amazing. Thank you for commenting! Fanned back.

Fanned back! It's because of the paper that is used in modern newspapers. The ones made in the last century were printed on paper (with acid in it) because it was much cheaper to produce as technology improved. The much older papers were printed on rag linen which is naturally acid free and more durable. The newer papers also yellow very fast. If you leave a new paper in the sun it will yellow within hours. It takes weeks or longer to yellow a paper from the 1800s. There are ways to preserve newspapers and I'm sure you could google it. My newest one is from 1859 so I'm afraid I can't offer any advice on yours. Thanks for commenting! :)
