Reed & Barton of Taunton, Massachusetts began in 1824 as the partnership of Babbitt & Crossman. Babbitt & Crossman, both Jewelers, began a small Britannia firm that went through several incarnations and almost collapsed but was saved by the work of three people: Charles E. Barton (brother-in-law of Crossman) Henry Good Reed and Benjamin Pratt. By 1840, Reed & Barton was established.
Reed & Barton produced over 100 flatware patterns, including Francis I, which has been a popular pattern since its introduction in 1907
