@brittanyyoung7524879: It's called Proxy bidding... it means that person has put in a high(er) bid into the auction, and the Listia auction system takes care of automatic bids for that person. Works the same way on eBay.

So for example if starting bid is at 499, then person A comes along and bids 5,000, the system will put it in at 499, and makes the rest of that bid a secret. Person B comes along and puts in a bid at 2,500, the proxy bid will auto jump up to that price, and Person A will still be "winning" the bid...Person A doesn't have to do this manually and it is automatic. If Person B or someone else bids more than 5,000, they will then beat Person A's proxy bid.

So if you seem to be instantly beat when you try to bid, that is the reason why... means you will have to bid higher to try to beat someone else's proxy bid.
