This is an official USPS cachet that was recently released in Birmingham, Alabama to celebrate the release of the new Adopt A Shelter Pet stamps at a local annual dog festival called Do Dah Day. For those of you unfamiliar with cachets, they are collectors' items created by the Postal Service to commemorate special events or stamp releases; they often increase in value over time.
Unique postmarks are created which are then destroyed within thirty days of the cachet release, never to be used again. Often, cachets also contain commissioned graphics or artwork; this one has an image printed on silk that is affixed to the cachet (the picture of the dogs and cats with the mailbag).
This artwork and unique postmark on this cachet are attached to a business envelope and are placed in a protective sleeve suitable for framing and preservation.
