From Historic Stamps of America. The issue date of the stamp was April 10, 1947 but this embossed envelope is dated April 10, 1999 from New York, New York 10199.
The 3¢ stamp preserved in this Cover was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Joseph Pulitzer's birth on April 10, 1847.
Joseph Pulitzer garnered his greatest fame posthumously by leaving an endowment for creation of the Pulitzer Prize. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, he provided the endowment for Columbia University's School of Journalism. The school is the most honored institution of its kind in the world.
This stamp, designed by V.S. McCloskey, Jr., features an inset of Pulitzer on one side. Also featured is the Statue of Liberty, for which Pulitzer was instrumental in raising funds for the pedestal upon which the statue stands. Inscribed on the stamp are the words, "Our Republic and its Press will Rise or Fall Together".
The Joseph Pulitzer Stamp, printed in purple by steel engraving, was first placed on sale in New York, New York.
