Description

The listing, 1852 SILVER ***THREE CENT PIECE*** A RARE COIN has ended.

"The three cent coin has an unusual history. It was proposed in 1851 both as a result of the decrease in postage rates from five cents to three and to answer the need for a small-denomination, easy-to-handle coin. The three cent silver featured a shield on a six sided star on the obverse and the Roman numeral III on the reverse. The coin was initially composed of 75% silver and 25% copper to ensure that the coin would be considered real currency yet not worth melting down for the silver. The coins were physically the lightest weight coins ever minted by the United States, weighing only 4/5 of a gram and with a diameter smaller than a modern dime and only slightly greater than the smallest gold dollars." Wikipedia

Note this one was holed at some point in it's history, but these are so very rare, they are small and many seem to be lost due to their rarity in the market place or in private collections. They are high value items.

I especially like the Roman numeral "III" inside the Large "C" for cent design on the backside.

Maybe, so it would not get lost -I am thinking many of these got lost because of their small size. These are rare and valuable items now-a-days.

are they still worth something after they put holes in them

Because of the rarity of this type of coin I would forgive a hole, and just be happy to have examples. If it were a Lincoln penny common date -then I might think a hole is not acceptable. Big difference though

Value is gone since there is a hole in it
