lol i tried doing something similar to this except i used a satellite dish to focus the signal but i didn't work so well. FYI You can substitute the tin can for a pringles cup. The long potatoe chip cup.

A few tips here for best results:

1)Try to find a can with smooth sides, rather than one with ridges stamped in it like the one in the pictures. Cans like the ones used to package X-mas cookies or fine chocolate candies work best.

2)The length and width of your can will dictate how far up from the bottom of the can the hole for your element should be drilled. It won't be the same for every sized and shape can. The conversion formula can be found online.

3) Use a metal can for best results. Other materials, such as plastic, won't reflect microwaves (wi-fi waves) into your receiver element nearly as well as metals.

4) Avoid using Pringles cans. They are long enough but they are much too narrow for good results. The Ideal can size is 3" to 4" (3.25" - 3.50" being the best) in diameter, with a long length. The longer length, the better.

If you need exact measurements, there is a calculator online dedicated to building home made Wi-Fi antennas. To find the website, type this into google search and click the first result in the list "How To Build A Tin Can Waveguide WiFi Antenna".
