I like to grow hierlooms from seed usually instead of hybrids, because the seeds are true to the mother plant, and if you leave some extra plants in over winter the next summer you will have flowers and then seeds!! I've been growing the same exact strain of hierloom turnips seeds over and over again from the plants I grow I harvest seed, save it, sow, harvest, collect more seed. Over and over again. The greens are very good to stir fry or make soups and they are excellent for your health. The roots usually get eaten by my rabbit, babs and she doesn't complain! When she poops in her hutch, and I throw out egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, food scraps, yard waste it all goes into my compost that eventually makes it to my cedar raised bed garden system. I use her poop to am end the top of my organic soil as well as the compost and sprinkle it over my plants in my garden. What you put in the rabbit from the garden comes out and then goes back in the garden, so I don't have to buy any fertilizer! This saves me a lot of money. And I don't spray my vegetables and in the rare event I must I use homemade organic treatments instead including companion planting with flowers (to help draw in beneficial pollinators that help your plants produce a good fruit set) as well as repell certain bad pests and insects they also draw in good predator bugs that naturally take care of the bad ones! and herbs that promote plant health in certain vegetables so the organic gardening system I've created is really frugal and effective!
