Lovely Vintage Metal Jewelry Box Windup With Music That Plays When The Lid Is Removed COOL!! They don't make them like this anymore. The tune this plays sounds familiar but I can not put my finger on it. It measures about four inches tall and wide. This shows some wear on the finish here and there but just adds character I think!! This is perfect for rings, necklaces, or bracelets. I do not think it is sterling silver. Thanks so much for looking!!
Questions & Comments
Sorry but what you have is a mid century powder holder. It is made of aluminum not silver and was very popular during the 40's.I.ve sold several in my a ntique store and are very popular. They always sat on the dressing table.
LOL, it's a word picture. And, very likely, a true story. Only someone with some wealth to their name would own such an item. If someone not so wealthy owned a jewelry tray, it was made of glass, and no music box.-LOL, unless that lady was singing. =D
This would have been on a lady's wash stand. It is designed as a jewelry tray, while a lady washed her hands. She had to remove any jewelry because back then, they only had lye soap and the lye would literally eat up and destroy the jewelry she was wearing. In this case, since it is a music box as well, it would have been placed a little further from where she was washing up. The lid would have been lifted and placed on the wash stand next to the box. Then, the box would have been wound and take all the jewelry off her hands and wrists, so the lye soap would not get them. As she was doing all this, she would listen to the beautiful song the box would be playing. When through drying her hands with a towel, she would return her jewelry to her hands and wrists and replace the lid back on top. Very lovely indeed. Good luck with your auction. =D
Wow that is amazing and makes since it is a unique design for a jewelry box and the metal is perfect for wet situations. I need to hire you to write my descriptions:) Thanks so much for the amazing visual.
My uncle owned his own landfill that he ran himself years ago. Found one just like this in the mid 70's but it had two ladies with big hats/feathers and it did play music also. Remember the bottom being of wood with the winder on it. Dumbo me, like a lot of boys, took it apart and for the life of me I cannot remember what happended to the metal container. The music mechanism I remember tinkering with but forget what happened to it also. It really bothers me now that i am older and realize its value.
Whoa! sheilawilliams75873708, has a point. I do, too. Many times back then in the olden days, things got repurposed. So, it's possible that we could both be right. Congrats, Miss Sheila on having your own antiques store. =D
yes I have one too but it doesn't have a picture just a metal knob made out of the top it's all one piece the lid is and the bottom and top are very heavy and I've had it since i was a child and It's a unique item and I love it and love this one too hun I might have to bid LOL Very cool and as always you have very nice auctions hun Love and Blessings Gypsy
:) Wow oldie but goodie! It makes me so sad to think of some grannie hanging on this for so long in hopes that a family member may enjoy it after they are gone. NOPE SELL SELL kids these days
That is hilarious I will have to remember that. I had this music box my Grandma got out of her neighbors garbage it had a ballerina in it that didn't move like she was supposed to when the music played. The neighbor was a very old woman and friend of the family. So years later after the old woman passed away I went to her funeral and when I came home I sat down on my bed with the music box. I pushed the lever over to start the music and what do you know the ballerina started to dance and bob all over the place. She still dances today!! I had the box for 7 to 10 years and she never worked till that day:)
