The listing, Red Onion/Chive Bulbs has ended.
Up for Auction is 6 Red Onion Bulbs, a sweet variety of onion that grow well from bulbs.
You can grow red onions from seed, transplants or directly from the bulb. Red onions, unlike other varieties, grow especially well from a bulb, which is referred to as a set. Sets are small onion bulbs that will sprout, grow a stalk and grow several more onion bulbs. Growing red onions from sets is more reliable and easier than growing them from seed. They grow best in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 through 8 where you can plant them in the early spring. If you live in zones 9 through 13, plant the bulbs in late winter. Plant red onion bulbs in an area with at least several hours of direct sunlight each day.
How to plant:
1)Dig a hole in the soil 2 inches deep.
2)Place the bulb into the hole so that the root end of the onion is down. The root end is the flat end of the onion and will have a brown circle on it.
3)Cover the bulb with soil.
4)Plant the next bulb in the same manner 4 inches apart from the first bulb if you are planting multiple bulbs.
5)Water the red onion bulbs generously until the soil is completely soaked.
6)Water the soil every five to seven days for the first month. After the first month the onions do not need very much water. You can rely on rainwater to provide the plant with enough moisture. If your climate is dry, however, water the onions every week until the soil is moist but not soaking wet.
7)Remove weeds near your growing red onion plants as soon as you see them.
8)Harvest the onions when the stalk flowers, falls over and dries up. This should take five months. To remove the bulb, gently dig around the bulb and pull it from the soil. Let the onions sit on the counter on a newspaper for at least one week until the outside skin dries up.
Take the GIN and you get 12 bulbs.
