Description

The listing, Chinese Mudmen, Antique- RARE!!2 Women!!! has ended.

This is for four Chinese Mudmen , small highly collectible ceramic figures. These were made , mostly from the late 1800's up through 1950's. You can see from the wide open base these are old. Newer ones have only a vent hole of small drilled hole, these you can see clearly are handmade inside. Te on is missing the top of an ear , two have a small section of one hand each , missing(the other hands are fine. And for display the damage isn't so noticeable and if you are good with sculpey clay these are easily repaired. Most all mudmen you see have damage or repairs of some type so this is normal for their age, some bring(even damaged)hundreds of dollars at auctions. But I thought my friends hereon Listia might just like these! (going though the Auction process can be lengthy and I've got a houseful of stuff I want to get rid of as I am "clearing the decks" as they say My health hasn't been so great lately , so I am cleaning out, now while I am more or less "up to the job" .I would say these are about 3 to 4" tall (if you need exact sizes just ask) No refunds no returns , I am not a store. (Sorry) They are sold "As is" so please look carefully at the pics. They will be shipped Priority USPS with tracking and $50 insurance, via Paypal (to be paid at the sale end) UPDATE:I have found information that states the impressed "CHINA" on these dates them between 1890-1919. It states the orignal molds , were destroyed for all mudmen during the war, most likely used to make arms..Also please note I think the one is a woman, which is incredibly rare to find in the older Mudmen and considered to be "The Holy Grail" of mud figures (There are many you can find of modern versions, but remember these are open bottom so not modern! )TY UPDATE!! I actually took a better look - I think I have TWO mudwomen!!! Lol!! (I think I priced these too low!!)

TY Dana yes they are really great! Originally made to accompany the Bonsai trees. The idea was to create and imaginary Landscape , where these people lived (kinda of like our dollhouse) They became extremely elaborate and created a world where beautiful things lived. The Bonsai's were a major part of the home, and some have lasted for generations! Being passed down in families along with the Mudmen. They also made a larger size for larger Bonsai's usually 12" Bonsai's we think of here are Japanese , but actually they began in China about roughly 1000 yrs ago.(Pretty amazing when you think about it!). I have a Fantastic Tang Type Dish these would be perfect for! (Actually I should have put them together! I just thought of it now! ) But I haven't figured out what the value is so I am not sure how to price it. Whoever wins these I will notify the winner when the Bonsai dish is available. All one would need is to add a plastic liner and a beautiful Bonsai tree!

Thanks Dana! Yes these are the early ones and quite rare, they made lots of similar ones after in the 1950's and they are still made today, but look quite different(different clay and colors) . I did quite a bit of research and found quite a few of the men selling for $375 each, even in poor condition. I am selling all 4 for 125000 credits which in terms of cash is far ,far less . It's a very good deal! Good luck if you are bidding! If you win I will do combined Shipping!

You can also find modern Bonsai dishes at a good greenhouse or plant store, they are not very expensive. Some come with the tree already planted. I believe there is a Bonsai Store here on Listia , even . I've seen there Bonsai's listed. You can also take any low wide dish rectangular or oval , fill with dirt cover with moss and find a small wild pine to "train" there are many directions for how to train Bonsai's to be bonsai' online. You use wire , sharp plant scissors, sold at most hardware stores.I can give a couple of links to the winner

Bonsai's online start at about $7. on up(sky is the limit!). You can add bridges, fountains anything you like to make them more realistic! There are online stores in Brooklyn(Brooklyn Botanical Garden has over 350 Bonsai trees you can see online to get an idea. There are whole Societies, you can join, some meet fairly often some do shows, and there are books including the "Sunset Book" that tell how to make real bonsai's. I found a man at the Flea Market here who grows them! Lol!
