Description

The listing, RARE Antique Victorian Tintype TinType Photo of PREGNANT Woman Her Mouth Carefully Scratched Out has ended.

I have collected many old tintype photographs over the past few years, but this one stands out as my most interesting and puzzling. This photo is of a lovely young woman, perhaps in her late teens, who is appears to be quite pregnant. I have not come across many tintypes of pregnant women as it wasn't common to take photos at such a stage in a woman's life.

But what is truly odd about this photo is that the woman's mouth has been very carefully and deliberately scratched out. The photo is in excellent condition with only some very light scratches--except to her mouth. This was not done by a child or by something having been placed on the picture that caused some damage. Someone did this quite intentionally.

I have stared at this photo at length and beseeched it to tell me it's secrets, of course to no avail. I try to come up with possibilities: was she a jezebel or had she simply stolen the hand of a man coveted by someone else. She looks sad, but that doesn't yield any answers.

I seem to list items that come with more questions than answers. I think I seek those items to keep me connected to the past, to keep me thinking and wondering. I need someone to give her a good home; she deserves it.

Details: Hand tinted, excellent condition, measures 4" by 2 3/8". Shipping is free to Listia verified addresses. Once again I implore you to ask questions and make comments. Doing so brings us together as a Listian community. I also just love to talk about this stuff! Thanks so much for viewing my auction and have a great day!!

I love antique photography for those very reasons. I refer to mine as adopted ancestors. I enjoy giving them names and a story. Great stuff, keep it up!

Thanks, I will :) There's just something about looking into the faces of people who lived so long ago and in such a different time. It doesn't matter that I don't know who they were...I like that you call them adopted ancestors.

Since she is very young looking, perhaps she came to e with child through some unsavory means and let it slip. That could be why her mouth was crossed out. Maybe there is a historical meaning behind it?

I have wondered the same things myself. Maybe it was unsavory or violent and someone wished to silence her. I truly wish I knew the history behind this tintype!
