Description

The listing, Antique Victorian Picture Frame with Embossed Celluloid Mat has ended.

No GIN--good luck!

Up for consideration is a lovely antique Victorian picture frame. The ornate metal frame has floral detailing at the top and corners. The frame has been painted pink and green--not the best paint job, but it looks nice. The best part about the frame is that it comes with a celluloid mat. Celluloid was an early type of plastic that was used in the late Victorian period. It was often used as a substitute for costly ivory in jewelry, toiletries and even picture frames. This mat has been embossed with an Asian-inspired design that is just beautiful. The frame has an easel back with a wishbone-shaped stand which is in keeping with Victorian-era frames.

There is some wear to the paint on the frame, and there are a couple of small paint spots on the mat. Otherwise they are in very nice antique condition. I have placed a real photo postcard in the frame, and there is a photo of a young woman underneath that was in the frame when I acquired it. Of course, you can always put your own photo in it. It measures 6 3/8" by 4 3/8" and the mat opening is 3" by 5". Finding a Victorian picture frame with its original? mat is pretty rare, especially when the mat has been embellished as this one has. Don't let this one slip by!

Thanks for posting the back of the postcard. I asked because of an interest in genealogy - it's always nice to have surnames pop up unexpectedly :)

What a curious inscription! I'm not sure what that last word or phrase is.

interested in photos with names, I like to find out the "story" behind the photo.

Do you think the paint can be removed without harming the frame?

I think so, but I don't know if a chemical paint stripper eould damage the metal underneath.
