I was just getting ready to ask the same thing. Without the track it's not considered to be a set is it? Without track you've got the added expense of trying to find the right track for what ever the size is of the train & cars.

To be clear: This set consists of 7 cars only. Please read the item description completely before bidding. "Reader's Digest Southern Pacific Line Train Set Collection" is the official name of the item, and so it is listed as such.

Are these cars made to actually run on a track behind an engine? Perhaps just decor? If made for tracks are they marked as to the gauge? For example: HO or N

I honestly don't know. I just know they are a collectors item.

Being Readers Digest would pretty much automatically deem it as a collectors set depending on the make & year. It should say somewhere on the boxes or cars what type of tracks it would take like "N" "HO" I did read the heading & description so did also ask if it was a set with tracks. I come from a family of 6. My 5 brothers & I all collect train sets. Some of the locomotives & cars were purchased in the range of $Hundreds of Dollars. We are all constantly watching for train sets with & without tracks.

Hello, Could you please let me know if on the box anywhere it reads "transportation Company used under license by High Speed Metal Productions"

Your photo's look just like what I have but, Nowhere on mine does it say "Readers Digest" Mine all say that they are "by High Speed Metal Productions" (on the box)

If your's and mine are the same, Then they will fit on an n scale track. But they are really only for display.

In case there is still confusion about this being a set or not.
Here is a copy of some of the dictionaries definitions of a set.

1. a collection of articles designed for use together:
a set of china; a chess set.

2. a collection, each member of which is adapted for a special use in a particular operation:
a set of golf clubs; a set of carving knives.

3. a number, group, or combination of things of similar nature, design, or function:
a set of ideas.

You do NOT have to have track for a group of trains to be a set. :)
