Looking at this for my wife so forgive me if this is stupid ? but is 1X same as XL like 2X would be XXL...

Not stupid at all. Even I can get confused because the makers vary in what they mean by that. But I will go with 2X usually means a 20-22 .. A !X( XXL ) being an 18-20 in this case. I hope this helps
