This, my dear, is something known as a Vinaigrette, or a "sniff box". Waaaaay back in the day, long before deodorant was invented, and before people had soap and bathed regularly, women of come culture and means carried in a breast pocket, or tucked into a corset these little brass or silver boxes with a sponge in them. The sponges were soaked in vinegar, or some other strong scented liquid, and it drew attention from body odors. Women carried little boxes, and the richer a woman was, the more ornate her box, some made with precious metals and jewels, while poorer women carried a rag soaked in it, and men were more likely to carry a simple sachet. Just a little hygiene history for ya ;-)

You do know what that is? It's an in scent burner. It's used by catholic priests in their ceremonies. It's not a treasure/jewelry box but could be repurposed into one. Just thought I'd let everyone know what it is.

Catholic priests use incense burners with a point on top, hanging from a chain or string, as they swing them to disperse the smoke...
