Description

The listing, Vintage Maneki Neko Lucky Cat Bank Statue Figurine Excellent Condition! has ended.

This auction is for a vintage ceramic Maneki Neko lucky cat coin bank. It measures approx. 8" tall.
In excellent condition--no chips or cracks

From a website:
The maneki-neko (Japanese: 招き猫?, literally "beckoning cat") is a common Japanese figurine (lucky charm, talisman) which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. In modern times, they are usually made of ceramic or plastic. The figurine depicts a cat (traditionally a calico Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed in—often at the entrance of—shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses. Some of the sculptures are electric or battery-powered and have a slow-moving paw beckoning. The maneki-neko is sometimes also called the welcoming cat, lucky cat, money cat, happy cat, beckoning cat, or fortune cat in English.

It is also sometimes called the "Chinese lucky cat" due to its popularity among Chinese merchants.

I have several of the chalk statues. They oldest nes, from turn of the century, we're carved and then painted. They have a dull finish and can be a few inches and up to 18". Pre 1900s are primitive and worth money.
Then the carnivals started giving away the chalk banks and statues. Those were so popular that they started molding and glazing them in the 60s.
I haven't seen this in person, to check it out, or research it,but it is nice that you have it.

Hi Norma, I bet you have quite a collection and you definitely know more about the subject than I do! I have come across much chalkware through the years. Most if it has been heavy and thick. I was surprised at the light weight feel to this one. As for glaze, this piece has more of a dull finish to it. It's hard to tell anything from the sticker but it looks older...at least older than what I'm used to seeing, I just thought it was cute! And I'm always surprised to find any statue at st vinnies that is not chipped or cracked. Thank-you for commenting, I learned something today!

Very Cool! Just an FYI: Dailybreak.com uses this same cat in their "Oddly Specific Fortune"s, but theirs moves his paw down to generate the fortune. Maybe that's where carolsragdolls got the idea. Way awesome, though!

It's a Japanese store. You can Google it and see if there's one by you.
They have really cool dishes too.

Yes,I did. They have stores in Texas, California and Washington. But they skipped Oregon, where I live! Lol

I have a collection of them. If you have a Daiso close to you, you can get some but they won't be as cool as this one.

I've seen the mechanical ones, you can buy them from china, but the reviews are terrible! Arms not working or worse yet, falling off..lol. I think an older, original one would be better if you are going to buy one!

You mite could use a cork for the stopper,,,
Jun 27th, 2016 at 8:52:58 PM PDT by
Original
You could, if it wasn't too deep and stick out too much. I have used tape before until I found the right thing!

I have one of these, the cool or unusual thing is he's frowning. that's rare to me. GOOD LUCK! These cats are great

I didn't notice that! You are correct, most all of the pictures of these cats..they are smiling. I don't know if there is any significance attached to it..but, it's interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Oh! I thought you were saying that you made the plastic cap into the stopper!
You mean that you put the rubber part into the plastic cap, so that it sticks out. Is that right?

Like this?:

Wow. How does that work? Do you put threads on the outside of the lid?
Jun 24th, 2016 at 7:34:17 PM PDT by
Original
Some of the milk caps have a natural thread on the inside of the cap, so just a little trimming is all that is necessary. Some other bottles, like juice bottles, do too. I look for caps like these in different sizes. I discovered this by accident one day.

Cool! You might be able to trim one to size. I was thinking about taking the sole of an old tennis shoe and see what I could do.
