Description

The listing, U.S. Navy Pepper Bottle Pontil Mark 8 Paneled Hand Tooled Civil War Era? Reproduction? has ended.

I don't know if this is a reproduction(from the 60's) or an actual civil war era bottle(from the 1800's).
By doing my research on this bottle, I found that either way, it might be valuable to a collector.
Please look at the pictures for the best description
I'm not a collector--just a finder!
Bottle measures 5-3/8" by 1-3/4"
The color is a darker green like the first picture
There is one tiny chip on the bottom of the bottle--you can't see it unless you turn it upside down
Has a few seed bubbles
U.S. Navy was the name of a company, not THE US Navy.
This bottle held pepper sauce, not black pepper
Most of what I've read says that the repos have a yellow tint to the bottles. i don't see a yellow tint.
If you google it, there is much written about this bottle and many examples for you to compare.
Questions & Comments
Original
Well I am a collector and I can't tell either. The color appears to match other bottles I have from that time period but the bottle itself seems too well made. While some bottle production facilities were turning out similar quality bottles they were usually for top shelf liquor or other expensive items. Either way as you said it could be a nice addition to someone's collection. Some reproductions are valuable in and of themselves because some people collect only repops and occasionally the reproduction is even more rare than the original. I once found a bottle in an old land fill dump that by appearances and considering where I found it I was sure was original and was valued between 1200 and 1500 dollars. Unfortunately the reproduction was worth about$10.

Thanks for writing in..I was hoping a collector would come along. I once found an old whiskey bottle, in a thrift store for a buck. I got 75.00 for it on febay so I know it was probably worth more. It was in such nice shape that I thought it was a repo too! I found this bottle in a thrift store, also. I just thought it was kind of neat looking, but when I googled it, I thought someone might like it. Do repos have seed bubbles too? Yes, this bottle does look well made, except for the pontil mark. The pontil mark is very sharp to the touch, but maybe repo bottles are like that? Yes, this bottle is a toughie, I can usually sway myself one way or another when I do research but this one is 50-50. I just don't want anyone to be disappointed. An authentic could be worth hundreds but a repo maybe a hundred. Just depends on who wants it, I suppose.
