The Gold Eagle has an obverse design that closely follows the original Augustus Saint-Gaudens double eagle design, originally released in 1907. Arguably the most beautiful design on any US coin, the mint decided to go with this design for the eagle program because of its popularity with collectors. It shows Lady Liberty walking toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand, and an olive branch in her left hand. She walks in front of a sunrise with the US Capitol building in the background.
The reverse design, by Miley Busiek, shows an eagle returning to its nest of eaglets, making this design a fitting combination with the beautiful obverse.
