Bast has many names, Bastet, Basthet, Boubastis, Ubasti & Pasht. "Pasht" is the root of our word passion. Bast was originally a lioness, the goddess of war, but evolved into the cat goddess. As the daughter of Ra, she was one of the goddesses known as the "Eye of Ra". By day, Bast would ride through the sky with Ra in his boat pulling the sun through the sky, protecting Ra from his enemies. She became known as the Lady of the East, the Goddess of the Rising Sun, and The Sacred & All-Seeing Eye. By night, Bast was a cat guarding her father from Apep, or Apophis, a serpent who was her father's enemy. As a cat Goddess she protected homes from rats & snakes, and ensured the health of the occupants. Cats were sacred & to harm one was a crime against Bast & very unlucky. Cats in Egypt were revered because they killed mice & rats, that threatened food supplies, and snakes. Royal cats were dressed in golden jewelry & allowed to eat from their owners' plates. Egyptians hunted with their cats, who were trained to retrieve prey, & kept as pets. Women would buy amulets of Bast with different numbers of kittens, representing the number of children she wished to have (the link to fertility & childbirth). Most households contained a statue of Bast for protection. An amulet with the utchat (all-seeing eye) hung over the door deterred thieves & vandals, placed over the mantel it averted illness, worn around the neck it protected one as they traveled. An amulet with a mother cat & kittens suckling or playing at her feet was often given as a wedding present to insure that the bride would conceive & bear children.
