Scientific/Latin Name: Ceiba pentandra
Origin: South America rainforests
Growing habit: MASSIVE TREE, can grow to heights of 150 ft+; has a wide cylindrical trunk (up to 9 ft. in diameter) covered in spines to deter damage to tree. The straight trunks are smooth, gray colored & reach up to 9 feet around. Large unique spines protrude from trunk preventing trunk harm (these spines can be useful to deter unwanted animals or people from entering your property, if the trees are planted in a row: I call it “defensive gardening”)
Hardiness: Decidious
Foliage: leaflets are 7-8 cm L,1-3 cm W.
Flowers/Blooming habit: Flowers usually open before the leaves appear. The 5 petaled flowers are 2.5 cm long, a creamy white or pale pink colored. Flowers put off an odor attracting bats that pollinate them.
Fruit/Seed: The brown seeds are round and found in pods. The pods burst open while still on the tree after the leaves have fallen. Pods contain a whitish cotton-like fiber which surrounds the seeds.
Its' timber is in high demand because of the great length of its trunks, the beautiful color of its wood, and its straight grain.
