Friedrich Hayek was an economist, and one of his thoughts was that the government shouldn't be the only one printing/coining currency. He thought companies should be able to produce it based on their own worth and folks could shop around for it. His attempt at minting coins did not last long, and he had some problems with the accuracy of his gold coin purity that led to his coin business shutting down.
