Pyrography means woodburning , so far as I know "Pyro" is fire.Idon't think this looks lie pyrography, I believe what you have here is an Asian (Japanese or Chinese)lacquerware box.Some were glove boxes, some held scrolls or papers,some were used for calligraphy implements, or as Fan boxes.I've had a few over the years.I was able to retouch the chips with slightly(not too wet!) acrylic paints with can be made to match by mixing the colors to blend. I sanded the rougher edges a bit first, then put a thin coat of red, feathering the edges into the lacquer.You can do a few layers smoothing edges with your fingers til it blends let it dry , and sand with a very fine sandpaper , gently. They also make lacquer clear in a spray you can re coat the whole box, once it's touched up.(Walmart or any art store carry's acrylics and final lacquer clear coat,be sure to use a toothpick to keep the top from sticking shut! Let it dry for at least 24 hours or more before closing.(Also for and deep cuts, you can use the white drywaller filler just sand before painting)

Pyrography actually means writing with fire. The antique pieces were often done with designs lightly "burned" into the wood with sunlight and some sort of lens or prism so you get the light design as on this box unlike the darkened design made by a wood burning tool
