Quality control was extremely poor for 1955 Philadelphia Mint cents. Severely worn dies remained in the presses far too long, as all three mints struggled to stay within their very tight budgets. Fully red gems do exist, but ones having a decent strike are scarce. One reader of The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine put it quite succinctly at the time: "Attention speculators! Save your perfect 1955-P cents and you too can own future rarities!" He went on to add: "The penny-makers should hide in shame."
