We’re Off to See the Wizard!
One of the best-loved movies of all time, The Wizard of Oz is the heartwarming tale of a young Kansas girl, Dorothy Gale, and her little dog, Toto, who are whisked away by a violent twister to the magical land of Oz. Accompanied by her new-found friends — a brainless scarecrow, a tin man with no heart and a cowardly lion — she sets off down the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City to find the wizard who can help her get back home.

Trivia
During filming, Judy Garland had to wear a painful corset device to make her appear younger and flat chested.

As part of Ray Bolger’s makeup, he wore a rubber mask with a woven pattern to suggest cloth. By the time the film was finished, the mask had left a pattern of lines on his face that took more than a year to fade away.

Bert Lahr’s costume was made from a real lion skin and weighed 90 pounds.

“Over the Rainbow” is number one on the American Film Institute’s list of top 100 movie songs of all time.

The Wizard of Oz is number six on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 greatest films of all time.

The song “Over the Rainbow” was nearly cut from the film because the studio thought that it made the Kansas segment too long and that it was degrading for Judy Garland to sing in a barnyard.

The ruby slippers worn by Dorothy are on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution.
