One of my favorite Tomatoes, the San Marzano tomato, a variety of plum tomatoes, is considered by most chefs to be the best paste tomato in the world.

Compared to the Roma, San Marzano tomatoes are thinner and more pointed. The flesh is much thicker with fewer seeds, and the taste is stronger, sweeter and less acidic. The San Marzano vines are indeterminate and have a somewhat longer season than other paste tomato varieties, making them particularly suitable for warmer climates.

As is typical of heirloom plants, San Marzano is an open- pollinated variety that breeds true from generation to generation, making seed saving practical for the home gardener or farmer.

San Marzano originates from Italy and is THE classic Italian paste tomato with rich, complex, sweet flavor essential for making traditional Napolitano sauces.

Typically, San Marzano Tomatoes are fairly low maintenance and can thus be quite easy to grow - only a basic level of care is required throughout the year to ensure it thrives. Being aware of the basic growing conditions this plant likes (soil, sun and water) in your area will result in a strong and vibrant plant.
