not sure what to say about this.. I think the pictures speak for themselves. 1987 US penny MY OPINION. .. severe error.. I would describe it as a forging error. we will consider good reasonable offers on it. we priced it high..
Questions & Comments
To clear up some misconceptions...Lincoln Cents from 1909-1942 were made of bronze, not copper. WW2 1943 Cents were made of steel and plated with Zinc. 2009 Lincoln Cents with a satin finish were made of Brass. All others after 1982 were made of a Zinc core with a copper plating. Copper plated zinc core coins should weigh 2.5 grams to be in correct weight tolerance. All bronze cents should weigh 3.1 grams. And sorry to say but there is no "forging" in modern coinage. Unless you go back to ancient times. When thinking forging think, well made swords and knives and tools or horseshoes. Also think hammer and anvil. Made by hand and not with a press, which makes finished coins. Planchets are punched from rolling stock sheets, not forged. The only time there is an overabundance of zinc is if the planchet is a bit too thick. There is a +/- .1 gram tolerance differential which is considered normal. This post was not meant to impugn your dignity, just a little history for all on Lincoln Cents.
forging entails the heating up of metals to form them into an object.. or to mix them together.. so please explain how the Stock Sheets are created. unless your entailing there is a magical process that just makes the Stock Sheets appear... maybe by saying "Klaatu,Barada Nikcto" in a graveyard while holding a printout of the federal budget... .. kinda like how city folk think Meat & vegetables just magically appear in grocery stores …?
you are the one who cannot understand English... read his comment again... ERROR COINS LIKE THAT WOULD BE DESTROYED AND MADE INTO NEW COINS... what do YOU think it means??? yes, if it was ERROR coin, you will never see it... because it would be destroyed and made into new coins... you never admit when you are wrong.. go and ask your mama and ask her to translate for you... blocking and then tell someone something??? so they cannot fight back BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOU ALREADY LOST.... you are funny... bye bye...
this is sad... and bad analogy... for one, the comment above was NOT directed to the seller (or you did not understand it?)... two, the analogy: if mcdonalds says they sell burgers, a customer pays for it and did not like it, they get refunded the money (or mcdonald will at least prove that what they sell are authentic). three, if a customer goes to burger king and comments about mcdonalds, they will not be blocked at burger king -- that is what happened above... and if a customer, even if they like your product, just for your "great" customer service, they will get their stuff from Chick-fil-A instead... and you know what? the comment above did not even say that your stuff is not authentic at all... (if you can read)... from what i see, everyone who comments is getting blocked... so I am sure I will be blocked as well? I signed up to look for coins (although not these error coins -- i am more for "proof" type coins)... but I think this could have been a great auction if all of those coin experts could only bid (and not blocked)... good luck to you...
looky.. he created yet another brand new account.. and the only thing he can do is Parrot my own words.. LLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
no one cares about your rambling.. your making yourself look completely pathetic.. but I will inform listia to trace your IP address so all of your accounts will get banned permanently...
to futuristic, about comment on arrow... for one, if this guy does not understand English and attacks ALL comments (even the ones that are not disputing the authenticity of the coin -- i believe arrow or another person was just DEFENDING another comment because this seller did not understand the comment correctly...) and as far as I can see by all the comments on here that the seller is the one who is rude... this site is customer service site - if you treat everyone this way in consumer business, you will be out of business in a hurry (and this is a fact). And yes, people will be the judge of this one if they think this is real error, then this will sell... if they don't think this is authentic, then this will remain unsold. And I am almost certain this will not be sold... so who loses? the seller with rude comments who will block anyone who is disputing the authenticity of the coin? and those who are disputing are the coin experts and those are the ones who will pay high amounts if they are sated... and he blocks all of them. I loved all of the comments (it was like a moronic comedy show) : )
yet another member who got blocked for defamatory comments creates a brand new account with the sole intention of leaving a defamatory comment and trying to erupt a feud in the comments section..
SO, SO, SAD
IT'S LIKE NO ONE UNDERSTANDS THE THOUGHT PROCESS INVOLVED IN ME POSTING--> MY OPINION..
but if people walked into let's say.. McDonald's and started verbally assaulting the staff because they don't think their hamburgers are real hamburgers because they are too small.. then they will also get blocked from that business.. it's McDonald's opinion their burgers are burgers. .and the sniveling whining public who think their screaming makes a difference about what a burger is are suffering from massive mental disorders. and guess what.. McDonald's still sells it's burgers.
apparently you have never heard of the 3 different types of Forging..
--> Hot Forging, Warm Forging, & Cold Forging..
Hot forging and cold forging are two different metal forming processes that deliver similar results. Forging is the process of deforming metal into a predetermined shape using certain tools and equipment—deformation is accomplished using hot, cold, or even warm forging processes.
What I meant by "forging" is that the U.S. Mint is not involved in such a process. The various metals, be they silver, copper, gold or bronze, are formed into ingots. The Mint hires a third party to form these into ingots, which are cold rolled into rolling stock sheets to a specific thickness for each individual coin. The Mint receives these sheets and stamps out planchets. No heat involved. The only heat involved is at the time of striking the coins, but again, not the kind of heat involved in forging.
Hi I'm a coin collector as well and I was wondering are you sure this is an error coin or just some coin someone has dipped in acid to make it look like this? You see before buying any coin I always try to track down its history and whether or not it has been professionally graded and inspected especially with the asking amount as high as yours is. You see I just like to have all the facts in hand with the I's dotted and the t's crossed as the old saying goes.
not sure if anyone knows the provenance of any error coin , except for " I got it " no it has not been professionally graded obviously. , no it has not been inspected.. I do not pay for those services. just like no one else does with a loose error coin.. if I were to get an opinion from some website or collector. it would be just that.. an opinion. 1 of over 9 billion opinions on the planet.
I have described it as a forging error. entailing there was an error in the metal mixing process when combining the metals.. apparently also described as an overabundance of zinc in the mixture leading to a phenomenon known as Zinc Rot .. not all pennies incur this phenomenon. .. so yes. in my opinion. 1 of 9 billion opinions. it is an error.. a defective forging mixture which lead to this current condition of the coin.. ( notice how your not blocked...because you were respectful.. )
This is not an error coin and you are a dishonest seller. I don't think you blocking people affects them at all. In fact I am fairly certain most of them will have blocked and reported you. Just like I will have done after posting this comment. Scammers like you give Listia a bad name.
yeah.. have fun reporting me for .. " my opinion"..
LOLOLOLOL
I have been on listia since it started in 2009.. my profile ID # is 15,660.. yours is 8,539,600.. if I was a scammer .. I wouldn't be on the site.. but my nearly 5,000 fans and over 13,000 items sold speaks for itself
I implore any & all who cannot control themselves enough to not post defamatory comments on an auction to block me.. that way I never have to deal with them.. ;)
It has nothing to do with how it was mixed. All zinc coins are subject to zinc rot. It does that on purpose because it's a chemical reaction, similar to shiny, brand new copper turning green when oxidized. The zinc reacts with the air when exposed through the copper plating, causing it to crust over, or as in your case, simply break apart. Coins made from pure zinc are even worse. If you ever see any grayish, whitish crusty coins from the WW2 era, they're like that because they are made from zinc. The mixing process has no effect on it. It's just a natural property of zinc.
And as you said, if you already knew this, then there is no reason to post this coin as an error, as it is not. It's misleading and deceptive to do so, and at the very least, it's clickbait. I'm not trying to be mean, but me and several others are trying to help you. No one who knows anything about coins is going to pay for a coin that has zinc rot for any price, especially not as high as you have set it. This is not harrassment, it's guidance.
ok so i flagged this against the rules cuz i think it is just wrong to be doing an auction of a destroyed penny and the price LOL!!!! are u crazy no one going to give u that much for a destroyed penny that u probably destroyed in some way shape or form and then put it on here just to get that much ink... no one in their right mind is going to give u that much for this not even a collector u funny man and i agree with some people on here this is just disrespect to the listia community and the main people who run the site for us to have fun
so.. you flagged it because you do not like the price and because you assume things..
LOLOLOLOLOL
ok.. sure thing .
but it is sweet of you to refer to me as a funny man.. I am glad you think so fondly of me.. but I am already taken honey-badger.. listia isn't a dating site.
( by the way .. The Mocking Jay was simply put one of the most idiotic movies made in the past few decades... but sounds like that would be the main reason your a fan out of it.. )
:-) #AaronFernando :: There was no need to be rude. Although it is stipulated in the rule book of the mint [ ALL OVER THE WORLD is my guess } that ERRORS / faulty coins are to be *destroyed - mistakes do happen & some such make their way out into circulation.
One thing, i must say ( admire ): I appreciate the fact that #crushfresh has not deleted the remark to which i reply. There are [ / far too ;-) }} many grouchy, sourpuss Listians who would have....
Even though the asking price is "higher than expected / or even reasonable { and, that is ONLY my viewpoint }, is not the *owner free to price their wares ?
I thought USA is [ ;-) L-0-L } a democracy... just like we are ! No offense intended ;-)

exactly.. and the unedited description has always stated --> " we will consider good reasonable offers on it. we priced it high.. ".. but apparently no one can read that far before they get all SJW in comments
Looks like the penny has bronze disease. Cause is likely due to it being exposed to salt water (i.e. Found on beach near ocean. Found in street after being in salt water during melting in winter [think when they salt the roads]).
Time for my two cents worth. I am a treasure hunter with a metal detector. (I did not read everything above, I have more important things to do) This is a copper plated zinc Lincoln cent that had been buried and then found with a metal detector. I have found hundreds of these. Some so bad that even Coinstar spits them out. The value is less than one cent.
well maybe you should have read everything . then you would understand defamatory comments only get you blocked permanently .. but you have better things to do.. like posting defamatory comments on auctions . good job buddy.. no go back to shoving your money into Coinstar. they love that 13% they are charging the idiots who do not roll up their coins and bring them to the bank
what's weird Ytmaya is that you continue to create new accounts in order to continue your comment campaign.. serious derangement syndrome in full effect..
you are very defensive, meaning you are wrong then? :D anyway, I have to comment because you like to attack everyone who gave their opinion on this.. and I am siding with them... and I think you were attacking rich293 AFTER you blocked him -- so he cannot defend himself? if you can understand English, he said, NOT AN ERROR, and he did not contradict himself... he said, IF IT WERE AN ERROR, you would not see it, because it would have been melted and made into new coins... so, the fact that you have it in YOUR hands, means exactly what he said, NOT AN ERROR... you understand now? :D and I bet I will be blocked now? :D
To correct a assumption that the Mint destroys all error. Yes, but only to a point. With billions of cents produced each year and only random inspections done per hour, many millions of errors escape the Mint each year and get into circulation. When an error is found that does not pass inspection, quality control informs the press operator and the machine is shut down, the die/dies removed and sent to the machine shop for repair if possible or the die/dies are defaced and or destroyed. Many if not most coins found with errors are then sent through the "waffling" machine to destroy their usefulness and are then sent to a third party to be ground and made into new metal. Sometimes, less than scrupulous individuals who are supposed to destroy these waffled coins save them out and sell to dealers. Although the Mint has not stopped this from happening, I'm sure at some point they will. The same goes for clips, as again, coins are sent in bags to a third party to be rolled. Companies like Loomis and N.F. String. These types of errors will not fit into a roll and are ejected. They are also supposed to be sent back for destruction, but again, people save these out, sneak them out and sell them to dealers or sell them themselves. So, enjoy your errors and waffled coins while you can.
I didnt read all the childish BS on here, i was drawn in by the cool picture and i have no interest in whether it is or isnt "legit".... BUT i would just like to request to be blocked, please! You are just trolling people and looking to pick a fight. Besides who wants to buy prestamped envelopes and carrot seeds anyway? Lmfao
so responding to comments made on my auction is ME trolling & ME looking to pick a fight..??
WoW>. your concept of Reality is pretty skewed there buddy. but will happily block ya per your request. we are currently selling garden seeds because it is.. well gardening season. and prestamped envelopes have always sold out . so we happily keep selling them. ..
but as anyone online knows. you can always tell the guys in their 30's who still live with their mom's house and never go outside in the sunlight simply by looking at their profile pictures. make sure she washes your underwear ..
I have 1972D, 1988D and 1994 pennies with same metal mix rot, just not as extensive as Urs but probably cuz I’ve kept mine out of circulation for almost 10 years. So obviously some do escape melt down and others remain in circulation
:-) #thomascurtiss39 :: Wow ! That's some REAL EDUCATIONAL STUFF ! I am saving a printed copy of your remarks / comment alongside my USA coins collections. Thanks for giving me enough inspiration to go back and double check my USA 1 cent hoard with a weighing scale besides me.
xx #ytmaya:: And all other "ignorant" NON-Collectors No need to be ^^^^^^^^ touchy about this PERFECTLY ENGLISH word ;-) I could be equally ignorant if embroidery / tailoring was being discussed. L-0-L ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The soccer final is still a few hours away** ;-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Like i explained above, mistakes do happen. Mint workers are also ordinary folks... like you or like me. Then, there are the unscrupulous ones who would purposely flout the rules to smuggle out a few oddities ** { ** Exactly because of the value associated } ** A big racket was unearthed here in India when they discovered UNMELTED error coins being deliberately mixed with legit "SCRAP" that was going out from a particular facility..
Tonnes of scrap is disposed off daily from every official coin minting facility & this activity is very strictly monitored. Can you IMAGINE ? What would stop workers from taking out LEGIT forged*/*minted coins IF there was no monitoring / security involved ?? The word ^^^^^^ used by me here is not a derivative of forgery.
" To forge " also means to " melt / heat to give the metal a desired shape "
So... let us decide to "stop making a fool of > ourselves < & "forge ahead"
Don't you folks have something more worthwhile to do than to troll a lady because she expects a "better price than you can pay" for an ODDITY she came by ?
Come to think of it, how much would two 1-cent coins used as POSTAGE on an USPS delivered letter fetch ??? My asking price is only 5,000 dollars. Or, find me another "legitimately mailed envelope" that carries USPS cancellation on a stamp worth 40- cents & 2 1-cent coins. Bet you will not find another BECAUSE it was ( and, still is.... ) against the rules to use coins as postage. BUT, a few USPS workers "overlooked" the infraction and that was it;-)

Considering It's from 1987, which is one of the first few years we started minted pennies with zince, it's most definitely zinc rot, not an error. It happens when the pennies are exposed to normal environmental conditions, as zinc is a terrible metal to make coins from and is easily corroded.
we already know that. maybe you could repeat something else that hasn't been repeated about 12 times so far..
not all pennies with Zinc in them incur this phenomenon. only the ones with an over-abundance of zinc in the mixture when the metal was forged. hence .. it is a forging error.
we are so glad you shared what you would do. everyone tell Adi here you are proud of him for sharing.. he deserves a participation trophy so he feels special.
