Description

The listing, Vintage pre-1940 “French ivory” celluloid powder box with wool puff has ended.

Celluloid is the trade name for the first synthetic plastic invented in the mid 1800s. It was used to make a variety of objects that are now collectibles until about 1940. It is a product of cellulose dinitrate blended with pigments, fillers, camphor, and alcohol to make a unique synthetic material categorized as a plastic.
This powder box from a vanity set is stamped “French ivory” (inlaid in gold pigment) on the bottom, since celluloid was commonly used to imitate elephant ivory.
This box is in great condition. No cracks or chips or warping—just some superficial scratches. Scalloped, domed Lid fits perfectly. Wool puff included may not be as old. (?)

Vanity sets similar to this one were very popular in the 1920s. This is likely to be made around that time.

Measures 5 inches in diameter and 2.5 inches high.

Note: celluloid is flammable so keep away from sources of heat/spark/flame etc.
Antique celluloid sometimes also inexplicably succumbs to celluloid rot which is characterized by the material cracking and becoming brittle. This piece does not have this condition, but it can spread from one piece to another, so if you collect celluloid items, keep them from touching one another.
