Earl : I think you are correct with your identifying it as a Brazilian 20 Reis and I also see the '20' as being counterstruck onto an older coin ( from the 1820-30's) of a different denomination . . / M .

OBS: Krause catalog doesn't give accurate values. Brazilian catalogs shows US$ 750.00 (1824) and US$ 2,200.00 (1829/1830) values for an uncirculated coin.

It's a brazilian 20 réis coin, copper made, minted in Rio de Janeiro from 1823 to 1830. If dated from 1824 with BRSA inscription instead of BRAS it's quite valuable. If dated from 1829 or 1830 and the obverse is inverted considering the horizontal axis it' more valuable. So look it carefuly maybe you can have quite a precious piece.
