On 1213 30-31 May, in the naval battle of Damme (in Flanders), the English fleet of 500 ships under the command of William Long Sword, Earl of Salisbury (half-brother, King Richard I the Lionheart) attacked and dispersed the large French fleet, which was supposed to support the planned king of France Philip II Augustus invasion of Flanders. The French fleet was blithely anchored (stood in the raid), when the British accidentally stumbled upon it. The British seized 300 and burned about 100 French ships, as a result of which Philip II had to abandon his intention. The threat of invasion was averted, but the conflict between England and France was not over.
