Definition - Liberal - open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values; believe that freedom is impossible without equality for all; favorable to progress and reform, especially when applied to politics and religion.
Conservative - opposed to change, disposed to preserve existing conditions.
So in those terms, our founding fathers were liberals because they wanted change, they wanted equality and liberty for all. Your definition is skewered to fit your narrow-minded (and conservative) views. To say today's liberals don't love liberty is just plain ignorant. Liberals want liberty for all -- not just the rich or whites or males. Conservatives want to take away liberties. They want to take away a woman's right to control her own body. They want to make it difficult for blacks to vote. They want to demonize anyone who is different - forgetting that freedom of religion also means freedom FROM religion. We don't want your religion to be forced down our throats. We want everyone to be able to celebrate their religion without fear of reprisals. Who has attacked temples, synagogues and mosques?
