Description

The listing, 10 Medjool Date Seeds has ended.

Home grown viable seedls Like most date palms, Medjools are male, or, female. Only the female produces fruit. There is no way to determine the gender of each new tree, unless it is actually a root sucker. Seedlings take 7-10 before blooming. Suckers from mature trees usually bloom 2-3 years after transplanting.

Growing Instructions
1. Soak the seeds in a wet paper towel for several weeks, or, soak in a bowl of water. Viable seeds will form a root from the rounded back of the seed. Green fronds will eventually emerge from the grooved front.
2. Fill several pots with a mix of half milled peat moss or potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Alternatively, use prepared Cactus/Palm tree blend. Prepare one pot for each seedling.
3. Sow the seedlings on the soil.
4. Cover the seedlings with a layer of soil that is ½-1 inch thick.
5. Put the pots in a warm, sunny area and water them. You can use a terrarium with a heating mat, and, an overhead full spectrum lightbulb if you don't have a South facing window. An old-fashioned radiator will keep them at the right temperature, too.
6. The seedlings should emerge in about 1 month
7. When the seedlings have 2 or 3 leaves, they can be transplanted outdoors, or, to larger pots if you intend to use them as Indoor/Patio plants.
8. Fertilize monthly with palm tree specific fertilizer. If you can't find that, use Miracle Grow indoor plant spikes monthly, with a sprinkle of Epsom Salt for the magnesium they need every 3-4 months. Use 1/4 tsp of Epsom Salt per gallon of water.

Trees start producing fruit when the trunk is ~24" tall, in their 7th-10th year. Officially, these do best in Zone 8a-11, however in a South facing location, protected from the winter wind, they've been known to survive 7b.
