Home grown viable seedls Like most date palms, Medjools are male, or, female. Only the female produces fruit. There is no way to determine the gender of each new tree, unless it is actually a root sucker. Seedlings take 7-10 before blooming. Suckers from mature trees usually bloom 2-3 years after transplanting.Trees start producing fruit when the trunk is ~24" tall, in their 7th-10th year. Officially, these do best in Zone 8a-11, however in a South facing location, protected from the winter wind, they've been known to survive 7b.
