1922 Germany 10,000 Mark Bill
The “Vampire Note”
Issued in January of 1922
Huge size! Roughly double the size of a U.S. $
Excellent condition with a few creases, but no folds, rips, pinholes or markings
Due to the amount of money owed post-WWI after being forced to take financial responsibility for all those involved in the war, Germany (then called Weimar Republic) decided to print more money. This devalued the Mark into oblivion.
For example, in January of 1922 10,000 Marks could buy you 250 pounds of meat. By the end of the year, it could only buy 50 pounds.
Even worse, in 1920, 50 Mark equaled 1 US Dollar. By the end of 1923, it took 4.2 Billion Mark to equal 1 US Dollar.
