Description

The listing, ANTIQUE 1895 British PAPER Issue PUNCH or THE LONDON CHARIVARI has ended.

Up for auction is a 1895 paper issue of "Punch, or The London Charivari", July 6, 1895 issue. This particular issue was No. 2817, Volume CIX. Folded size is about 9" x 11-1/4".

I had to look up the word Charivari, as it was not a term I was familiar with, and a British dictionary has it listed as: "A noisy mock serenade performed by a group of people to celebrate a marriage or mock an unpopular person." Not sure what that says about the publication...

Printed by William Stuart Smith, of No. 30 Loraine Road, Holloway, in the Parish of St. Mary, Islington, in the County of Middlesex, at the Printing Offices of Messrs. Bradbury, Agnew, & Co., Limited, Lombard Street, in the Precinct of Whitefriers, in the City of London, and published by him at No. 85 Fleet Street, in the Parish of St. Bride, City of London.

This paper was published every Saturday. It's a folded publication, and you can see some slight wear on the corner and edge from age and storage, but the paper is in remarkably good condition for being 127 years old!

As you can see in the photos and scans, there are many black and white illustrations, and besides all the neat old ads, there are the articles with English wit and humor.

I originally purchased this to cut apart and use in a vintage journal I was making. However, I have had it for some time now, and cannot bring myself to cut it up. Rather, I think it should probably be in the collection of someone who enjoys old ephemera.

These are hard to find in good condition! Smoke-free home.
