this is a piece of eight ( a large silver coin cut into pieces to make change basically), this a piece of an 8 reales coin that was cut down like that. a part of a larger silver coin. it is called clipping or chopping and is evidence of piracy. note the cut edges.

the 1715 treasure fleet:

under the command of juan esteban de ubilla, twelve spanish ships returning from the new world to spain packed full of silver & gold coins -eleven of the twelve ships of this fleet were lost in a hurricane, some artifacts and even coins still wash up on florida beaches from time to time...according to cuban records, around 1,500 sailors perished while a small number survived in lifeboats. many ships, including pirates, took part in the initial salvage.
