I am looking at this as more of an mp3 player than as a phone, so that the battery can be replaced when necessary. Do you know how much internal memory the player has, or is a card necessary?

It has enough internal memory to hold about 60 songs at 128 bit rate. A Micro SD card up to 16MB can be used via the Micro SD slot on the phone. Thanks for asking and fanned!
