This is for both the Vintage Fan and vintage (like the softest silk) hankie. Every lady used to carry these two items wherever she went. And today I'm listing two items from that elegant past when ladies had the vapors because they were so delicate (really it was because their corsets were too tight for them to breathe properly). In a lady's portmanteau, she carried a tiny bottle of smelling salts, and hankie to dab at a moist brow and a fan so she could be fanned for more air. Many of these ladies prized a smaller waist so intensely that they had a bottom rib or two removed to achieve that perfect 18" waist well past their girlhood figures had gone due to the first or second pregnancy. But oh my, I shouldn't have used that word. She didn't get "pregnant" she was "with child" or "indisposed", but never that vulgar word "pregnant, and when she began to "show", she was confined to her boudoir unless visitors were other ladies or family members. She was not seen in public in the "family way".
