Description

The listing, Cameo Mourning Pendant Without Chain has ended.

This is a wonderful old pendant that could bring you great satisfaction of ownership! It is about 1 1/2" -2" long and would need a heavier chain to wear it securely! I suspect that is why it's chain is missing. Probably couldn't stand up to the wear & tear of ordinary life so all that had survived is the pendant. Usually, the pieces were done as a brooch to be worn at the neck of a shirtwaist during Victorian times & still worn by some ladies as late as the 30s. I suspect this piece is not Victorian but a much later piece. Most likely 20th Century but before mid century. I have no provenance on it, so am insure. I do know this- it isn't plastic of any kind & it isn't this new resin either!!

No. This is a carved piece. A true cameo in style as well as in keeping with the mourning traditions.

Very nice! I don't think I've ever run across one anything like it.
I seem to see lighter spots on and around the cameo it's self. Is that light reflection, or could this be some type of plaster of Paris painted after it dried? W
Dec 6th, 2013 at 10:01:35 AM PST by
Original
No, it's just the lighting. No imperfections or "plaster of paris" on this item. I do see where someone tried to test it by scratching on the back of the item, but those are very minor and probably fixed with a little olive oil. Thanks for stopping by.

thank you, sorry it bummed you out, but that's what they are called because the ladies used to wear black jewelry when they were in mourning, but then you probably knew that

There are cameos made from Lava, Gutta Percha,Jet, Vulcanite, Bog Oak , and Glass(French Jet) are you sure you want to sell this jlynn? Mourning jewelry is off the charts at the antique shows!! It's gorgeous!! Did you have the metal tested? Any marks? There is a kool site "The Art of Mourning" with Cameos, and hair jewelry. And FYI 1846 Goodyear invented the predecessor to the rubber they make tires from. Quite a bit of jewelry was made from "Vulcanite" in those days.True Jet is probably the most expensive of all

No, I just cut off the bail in the picture when I cropped the picture. I'd better put a better picture up. Sorry about that.

Okay thanks and no worries. I figured there had to be a bail or at least a place for a bail and it just got cut off in the picture but wanted to ask to be sure.
