Description
The listing, 1788 France Jeton Coin Token French King Louis XVI - OPTIMO PRINCIPI has ended.
This is a nice old coin dated 1788. It has a bust of Louis XVI (I think) on front and a statue or monument on back. It is holed, but has good details for its age. See photos for condition. Dime shown for size reference only. Shipping is FREE in the US, $5 shipping to Canada. Thanks for looking!
Questions & Comments
Hi if you ever find one without a hole let me know !!
Great question! There are several possible explanations. Back in those days, people who were traveling would sometimes punch holes in their coins and sew them into their clothing. If they were robbed while traveling, their money would be hidden. Sometimes coins were nailed above a doorway of a new house to show future owners what year the house was built (and for good luck). Sometimes they were holed to be made into a necklace. Sometimes coins were nailed to the mast of a ship for good luck. There are many possible explanations as to why this coin was holed, but my best guess is that it was used as a necklace, since the head side is lined up straight with the hole. Thanks for asking!
