Yes it will work, please see below:
new LeapPad 2 now also allows younger children, ages 3 and up to access content that is appropriate for their abilities. Though the newer version has some nice, new qualitative amenities, if you have a first generation LeapPad and multiple children, definitely keep it, all of the apps and cartridges that you have previously purchased can still be utilized on this device protecting your investment.

I cannot say honestly. I looked it up on ebay and the cartridges look the same size but I don't know how they work since they are with a book and the Leap Pad2 uses not books

Thank you for your concern. I had answered that I did not know but someone cited the Leap Pad website and the web site says that it does. I guess for bidders where this is going to be a issue I would look this information up personally before bidding
