Callicarpa

Beautyberry is one shrub that's really earned its common name. In fall, the plant becomes a showstopper thanks to its clusters of small violet-purple fruits. The bright color stands out, especially after the plant loses its leaves. The fruits develop from summer's clusters of small pink flowers and may attract several species of birds to your yard.

Beautyberry blooms on fresh growth, so if you need to prune it, the best time to do so is late winter or early spring. In the coldest areas of its range, it's sometimes grown like a perennial in that the stems die back to the ground every year and are replaced by new shoots in the spring.

This adaptable shrub blooms well in full sun or part shade and is relatively drought tolerant.
Back in the day branches with leaves crushed a bit were placed in the bridles and saddles of horse to deter mosquitoes and gnats.
I made a tincture out of the leaves and let sit for a month then added water in a sprayer and sprayed the front porch in which it did chase away the bugs.
People make jam out of the berries but I leave most of the seeds on the bush for the Mockingbirds and Cardinals. They love them. So do the butterflies and the bees when they bloom

They do grow wild here in some parts of the South but look nothing like mulberry for mulberries grow on large trees and these are bushes and very distinctive in there looks. I have seen them all over in the woods. The birds carry the seed off from the original bush for they are easy to grow. I some growing elsewhere on my property that came from my parent plants.
